Lanfear

A fallen genius who sought to rule the world, only to become its most dangerous slave.

Lore & Background

In the Age of Legends, Mierin Eronaile was a visionary scientist and one of the most powerful female channelers in history. Her relentless research into accessing the True Source without risk led directly to the creation of the Bore—a fatal curiosity that shattered the world's seal on the Dark One. When the Shadow touched her mind across the breach, she embraced the offer of immortality, becoming Lanfear, 'Daughter of the Night.' She viewed herself as Lews Therin’s intellectual and spiritual equal; when he chose Ilyena instead, her devotion curdled into a possessive obsession that has spanned millennia.

In Their Own Story

In the Third Age, Lanfear operates from the shadows, most notably adopting the persona of Selene to manipulate Rand al'Thor. She competes fiercely with Moiraine Damodred for influence over the Dragon Reborn, leveraging her mastery of Tel'aran'rhiod and knowledge of ter'angreal to outmaneuver the Aes Sedai. Her ambition shifts from ruling by Rand's side to securing power through an alliance with the Seanchan Empress Tuon. Her end comes at Shadar Logoth; attempting to seize control of Mashadar's evil to rival the Dark One, she is consumed by the darkness she sought to weaponize, falling in a final, catastrophic display of hubris.

Reader's Guide

Lanfear functions as a primary antagonist whose arc illustrates the corruption of unchecked ambition. While other Forsaken serve out of fear or dogma, Lanfear schemes constantly to place herself above the Dark One’s will, aiming to rule beside Rand rather than under him. She is renowned for weaving the One Power with speed and creativity that rivals the Dragon Reborn himself, often employing complex weaves inaccessible to lesser channelers. Her narrative role pivots on her intense rivalry with Moiraine Damodred and her twisted desire to reclaim Lews Therin in his new life. Key moments include her guise as Selene, her betrayal at Shadar Logoth, and her relentless pursuit of the Dragon Reborn throughout the series.
