The Wheel of Time Codex

Padan Fain

A man consumed by hatred, now a force that devours both Light and Shadow.

Padan Fain is a wound in the fabric of history, originating as a simple innkeeper's son from Emond's Field before transforming into a chaotic agent of Shadar Logoth. Initially appearing as a minor antagonist during the first book, he evolves into a unique entity that transcends the traditional binary of Light and Shadow, becoming a living embodiment of pure malice known to some as Mashadar in human form.

Throughout the series, Fain serves as a relentless pursuer of the Dragon Reborn, driven by an obsession that defies logic and mortality. His journey takes him from the borders of the Two Rivers across continents and into the very heart of the Shadow's power, where he undergoes a terrifying metamorphosis. He is not merely a servant of the Dark One but a rogue element that threatens to consume both sides in his quest for vengeance.

Lore & Background

Padan Fain began his life as the son of Master Fain, an innkeeper in Emond's Field. His transformation started when he was tasked with delivering a letter to Caemlyn but was intercepted by Darkfriends. He fled into Shadar Logoth, the ancient city of pure evil, where he retrieved a dagger that had been used to kill the city's last inhabitants. The corruption of the city seeped into his soul, twisting him into something far worse than a standard Darkfriend. While the Shadow sought to use him as a pawn, Fain eventually realized that his own hatred for Rand al'Thor was stronger than any command from the Dark One.

As the series progresses, Fain becomes a singular anomaly in the cosmic order. He is no longer fully human, nor is he entirely a servant of the Shadow. The corruption of Shadar Logoth has fused with his soul, creating a being that can exist outside normal constraints of life and death. He travels through time and space, appearing at critical moments to disrupt the plans of both the Light and the Dark. His presence acts as a poison, sowing discord and chaos wherever he goes, making him a wildcard that even the Forsaken find difficult to control or predict.

In Their Own Story

Amidst the chaos of Falme, Fain moved unseen until he chose to reveal himself. No longer looking like the nervous man who once fled Emond's Field, his silhouette was jagged against the storm. In his hand, the dagger from Shadar Logoth hummed with a sound that was not quite a voice, but a scream trapped in metal. He did not care for the armies clashing below, nor the prophecies being spoken by kings and queens. His eyes held no human warmth as they scanned the horizon for one specific face. 'I will find you,' he whispered, the words dissolving into the wind like smoke. The dagger pulsed, hungry and alive, feeding on his endless, burning grudge. He was no longer a man; he was the shadow that followed the light, waiting to extinguish it.

Reader's Guide

Padan Fain is one of the most complex antagonists in the series, evolving from a petty thief into a cosmic horror. His primary role shifts from a pursuer of Rand al'Thor to an independent force of chaos. Initially, he represents the mundane evil of greed and betrayal within the Two Rivers community, but his corruption elevates him beyond human morality. Fain serves as a wildcard that disrupts any plan involving either side; tracking him requires understanding that he is driven by personal hatred rather than loyalty to the Dark One.
