The Wheel of Time Codex

Trollocs

Born of shadow and sorcery to crush the light with savage fury.

Trollocs are the grotesque vanguard of the Shadow's armies—living abominations forged in the Age of Legends to break the will of humanity. Born from a dark alchemy that twisted human flesh with the traits of wolves, bears, eagles, and insects, they possess a chilling, cunning intelligence masked by savage bloodlust. Unlike mindless beasts, these hybrids can execute complex flanking maneuvers while driven by an insatiable hunger for destruction. As the most numerous force in the Dark One's war, Trollocs have haunted the Westlands since the Breaking, serving as the relentless shock troops that swarm battlefields with a fanatical devotion to their masters.

Lore & Background

The creation of Trollocs dates back to the final days of the Age of Legends, when the Forsaken sought a military force capable of overwhelming the human armies. Using the One Power and dark alchemy, they twisted human DNA with that of various animals—wolves, bears, birds of prey, insects, and more—to create a soldier that was faster, stronger, and more resilient than any normal man. Unlike their creators' other experiments, such as the Myrddraal (Fades), Trollocs possess the ability to reproduce naturally, allowing their numbers to swell over millennia without constant magical intervention.

Physically, they are a chaotic blend of species; one might have the head of a boar and the arms of a gorilla, while another bears the wings of an eagle and the legs of a stag. Despite this monstrous appearance, they retain a twisted form of human speech and complex tactical understanding, though their minds are clouded by the Shadow's influence. They are capable of feeling fear but are driven by a deep-seated hatred for all things that do not serve the Dark One, particularly the Aes Sedai and anyone who can channel.

Throughout history, Trollocs have been the driving force behind the great wars of the Breaking and the subsequent centuries of darkness. They were instrumental in shattering the world during the War of Power and continued to raid the borders of humanity for thousands of years until the Great Blight was sealed off by the Bore's aftermath. Their return in the Third Age marks the beginning of the endgame for the forces of Light.

In Their Own Story

The wind through the Two Rivers shifted, carrying a stench of sulfur and rotting meat that made Rand's skin crawl. From the treeline, they emerged not as men, but as nightmares given flesh: a creature with the snout of a wolf and hunched shoulders of a bear stepped forward, its yellow eyes gleaming in the twilight. Behind it, a dozen more shuffled into view, claws scraping against the dirt, chattering in a guttural tongue that sounded like stones grinding together. They did not run; they advanced with a terrifying, rhythmic patience, knowing fear was already taking root in the villagers' hearts. The wolf-headed leader raised a curved blade, and the pack surged forward, their shadows stretching long against the dying light.

Reader's Guide

The Trollocs serve as the backbone of the Shadow's military might, functioning as the primary infantry force in the War of Power. Their goal is simple yet absolute: to eradicate all life that does not belong to the Dark One and to prepare the world for the final victory of the Shadow. Unlike the disciplined armies of the Light, Trolloc tactics rely on overwhelming numbers, terror, and brute strength.

Their ranks are composed of various sub-types based on their animalistic traits, ranging from the agile, bird-like 'Gholam' (though distinct) to the massive, bear-shouldered brutes. They are led by Myrddraal, who act as both commanders and enforcers, keeping the Trollocs in line through fear and authority. While individually formidable, they often fight in swarms, using their superior strength and regeneration to wear down organized defenses.

In the conflict between Light and Shadow, Trollocs represent the physical manifestation of chaos. They are the force that threatens to overrun the nations of the Westlands, forcing humanity to unite or perish. Their resurgence signals the unraveling of the seals on the Dark One's prison, making them a central threat in the prophecy of the Dragon Reborn.
