Seven Seals
Seven locks hold back the Shadow; once shattered, the world begins to break.
The Seven Seals are ancient, mystical artifacts forged by male and female channelers of the Age of Legends to imprison the Dark One within his prison at Shayol Ghul. Resembling small, unbreakable objects made from materials that defy normal identification—such as crystal, metal, or stone—they serve as the primary locks holding back the Shadow's influence on the world. As long as all seven remain intact and in their designated locations, the Dark One cannot touch reality; however, once broken, they allow his corruption to seep through, eventually leading to the Breaking of the World.

Lore & Background
Over thousands of years, the knowledge of the seals' exact nature faded into myth, though their existence was preserved in fragmented histories and prophecies. By the time of Rand al'Thor's birth, only a handful of individuals knew where they were hidden or what they looked like. The seals had been moved from their original locations to various hiding spots across the continent, guarded by secret societies and forgotten lore. When the Dragon Reborn began his journey, it was revealed that the seals were not merely dormant; they were slowly cracking under the pressure of the Dark One's growing strength, a sign that the cycle of time had reached its critical turning point.
In Their Own Story
The wind screamed through the narrow canyon, scouring the stone with grit and carrying the metallic tang of ozone. Rand crouched beside the rough-hewn altar, his fingers trembling not from cold, but from the low, dissonant hum that seemed to rattle his very bones. The object before him was small, a shard of crystal that defied the eye, pulsing with a sickly, unnatural light. Beside him, Moiraine's face was pale as moonlight in the lantern's glow. 'It is time,' she whispered, her voice swallowed by the gale. With a heavy heart and no other choice, Rand raised the hammer from the Two Rivers. The crystal seal did not shatter; it dissolved into a cascade of black sparks that hissed like dying embers upon striking the ground. In its wake fell a silence so profound it felt heavier than stone—the crushing weight of a world unbound.
Reader's Guide
The Seven Seals act as the primary bolts on the door of Shayol Ghul, holding the Dark One at bay through inherent, passive power rather than active channeling. They require no maintenance; their failure is a slow, inevitable decay driven by the relentless pressure of the Shadow and the fading magic of the Age of Legends.
When a seal breaks, the prison does not instantly shatter, but its integrity crumbles. This breach allows the Dark One's corruption to seep into reality, manifesting as the rise of Trollocs, the madness of channelers, and the chaotic weather that signals the approaching end times. The breaking of all seven seals is the final trigger for Tarmon Gai'don.
Unlike weapons, these artifacts cannot be wielded to control the Shadow; they are purely defensive. Following the Breaking, the Aes Sedai scattered them across the globe to ensure no one could inadvertently destroy them or misuse their power. In the current timeline, Rand al'Thor is destined to shatter each seal and subsequently re-forge them into a new, unbreakable set using both the One Power and the True Power.
Did You Know?
- The seals are made of materials unknown to modern science or magic, described variously as crystal, metal, and stone depending on the location.
- Breaking the seals does not free the Dark One immediately; it merely weakens the prison enough for his influence to spread before the final confrontation.
- The Dragon Reborn is prophesied to break all seven seals himself, a task that requires him to travel to distant and dangerous locations.
- After being broken, Rand al'Thor does not re-forge seven distinct artifacts; instead, he creates a single new seal using both the True Power and the One Power combined at the end of A Memory of Light.
